"CINEMA PARADISO" by Giusepe Tornatore
this film is on the top of my list as one of the greatest films ive seen. this is the first film that made me cry me eyes out! a total tear jerker! the first version i ahve seen was the theatrical cut, i was kind of upset cos upto the end of the film there are some things that really straigthen out i was atually clinging up for more and that bums me out but 2 years after seeing it i found out (thanks to wikipedia) that there's a directors cut where all my question finally got answered! i was like whew! anyways, the story is divided into 3 chapters of the life of toto (lead character). 1st chapter is his childhood life its about a young sicilian boy who befriend an old man who works as the projectionist in the "cinema paradiso". the boy named "toto" has so much passion for films since that is their only way to entertain themselves at that time. as to "alfredo" (the old man) treated toto as his best friend. his companion and his own son(since toto has no father). the 2nd chapter is toto's adolescent life, where he starts to fall in love with this beautiful girl named "helena". he did manage to capture helena's heart but that didny worked out for them pretty much coz helena's father is against to their relationship. helena's father has a great future set to his daughter and to him (father) toto is just a poor, simple sicilian boy who has no future and no match for his daughter. so his dad moved helena away from him.an on the last chapter is about toto being already an adult who went back to his hometown after recieving a phone call form her mom that someone close to him already died (alfredo) and aslo to reminsce his hometown after of so many years of being away to his family and to alfredo. toto is now successful and finally achieved want he trully wants for himself and that is to become a director of his own film but deep inside him something is missing and needs to be puzzled and that is to go back to where his dreams started and to find the love that has been cut. the story is about tradition, culture, friendship, love, and of course lots and lots of cinema! this film would make you cry, laugh, and valued someone you really care about. well as for me. i kinda see myself as toto. since i for one loves films so much. but the thing is, for me i think it will be just a passion/hobby for me and it wont be gone any further.
see it for your self! you'll love it!
"IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE" by Wong Kar Wai
unarguably one of the most gorgeous, well-made film ive seen there ever was! hands down to the great WONG KAR WAI. in the mood for love as i described it as a moving renaissance painting. what so good or should i say "great" about this film is that, how wong kar wai made this film. since its really in his thing that every movie he make, he makes it a point that not only the story is great but how it is made as well. the color that he uses is so powerful its like almost hypnotizing in such way. the cinematography is jaw dropping i was goddamn hooked! and also the scoring, man it so haunting! the umeji theme that he used perfectly fits to the character so much its a like a rythm that the leads needs to follow and lastly his camera movements, from the slow phasing smokes out of tony leung's cigars is soo mezmerizing as if it has a story of its own and up to the focusing on the raindrops falling on the floor..is ahrg! well at first you'll notice what the hell was that all about? what the hell was that for?. well actually that his one of wong kar wai's thing that made him one of asia'a gift to the asian cinema in lined with the other legends like akira kurosawa, zang yimou, kenji mizoguchi, ang lee. about the story, its a about 2 couples who lives in the same building not knowing that their partners is having an affair with each other. tricky huh? but this is not your typical boy meets girl kind of thingy. this is way way better than those kind of crap. tony leung and maggie cheung is like magic the way they deliver their acting so great and so realistic to the extent that you would forget that its just a film! thats how great they were in this movie. of all films ive seen of wong kar wai, this one is by far the best.
"THE GODFATHER PART1" by Francis Ford Coppola
what a unbelievably excellent film. but it took me a year before i watched it Cos actually i bought a copy of this film a year ago but the reason that i don't have any guts to watch it is because the film is 3 HOURS LONG! i thought it will bore me and just waste my effing time. so just today i don't know what came up and finally decide to watch it. and to my surprise, none of those 180mins. fail to bore me as the matter of fact, i was still clinging up for more. i was in awe and can not believe myself why it took me a year before to watch it. the film tells the relationship of the CORLEONE FAMILY and holding up their business(drugs deals) and coping up as being sicilian living an american life. the godfather himself (marlon brando) is the patriarch of the family and one of the head of the five families. together with his children helps him taking care of their family business. santino as his short temper son, fredo as the naive who holds their business in las vegas, connie as his only daughter who oftenly beaten up by his husband(carlo) and lastly michael, the youngest son who he never wants to get involved in his family business. but little did he know he will soon took over as the head of the corleone clan. this francis ford coppola's epic masterpiece is about family, loyalty, greed, relationship. i dont know if i would recommend the film coz if you're into mafia films (well so am i) you probably wont bother seeing it. but hey, it works on me i was totally glued watching the entire film and i now consider one of the best and i don't know why after finishing the film i got goosebumps for such reason. marlon brando is still and will always be great and so as al pacino, robert duvall, james caan and dianne keaton. its an all star cast! (kung mag kakaroon ako ng godfather, i simply wants don vito corleone to be one lol). the movie ends up in michael already taking care of the business. and i cant wait to see the sequel of with(ill prolly watch it tomorrow). i just hope that my expectation of the sequel will be as great as to what i had on the first one. THE GODFATHER is without a doubt the best american film and one of the best ever made in the world. and oh the scoring is so wonderful! nino rota is a maestro in composing lovely scores.
the films's famous line were : "ill make him as offer that he can't refused" clever isnt? that's one hell of line. lol
"THE GODFATHER PART2" by Francis Ford Coppola
As i told before im going to see the 2nd installment of one of the greatest american film ever created. so heres what i got to say
The Godfather is considered to be among the greatest films ever made, both critically and publicly. Its sequel, The Godfather: Part II is a continuation of Michael Corleone's goal to create a powerful and respectable family empire. At the same time, the film gives a history of his father, Vito Corleone (played brilliantly by Robert De Niro), and his rise to power at a young age. Al Pacino's performance is quiet and solemn... He is cold and ruthless, with a whole contrast from the idealistic innocent war hero we initially met at the beginning of the first film... Here he's a calculating and frightening force, seeking to expand casinos into Pre-Revolutionary Cuba and consolidating an empire surrounded by perfidy and treason, maintaining total confidence in his ability to control the situation whether testifying before enraging Senators or trying to outface his worst enemies. Robert De Niro is particularly wonderful and convincing as a young Vito Corleone, who was of course played by the constantly-spoofed Marlon Brando in the original. De Niro takes an iron grip on his character and completely engulfs himself; this was, in 1974, the sign of an actor who would go places. Indeed, he did.I hesitate to call it a sequel, as "sequel" is quite simply the wrong word I am looking for. A film like"MANO PO: 2(LOL)" is a sequel but in the case of "The Godfather Part II" for me its something more. It's just too good to be called a sequel its like they just cut the first half coz you have to pee-and-be-right-back-in-a-couple-of-minutes kind of thingy. It is almost unthinkable to watch this film without having seen The Godfather (1972) first. both films compliment with each other. if the first one is arguably the greatest film ever made, the second installment is easily the best sequel ever produced hands down. its another perfect 5/5 for me!im going to watch the last installment of it, but critics says ITS NOTHING COMPARE TO THE FIRST TWO GODFATHER'S. well tingnan natin, well thats for them to know and for me to find out if the 3 godfather movie is gonna be GREAT! GREATER! GREATEST???the film's famous line were (which by the way, is so often used now a days)."keep your friends close and your enemies closer"
"ACROSS THE UNIVERSE" by Julie Taymor
Across the Universe is a movie that i think all beatles fanatics should definitely go watch it (myself included).if it only not for the beatles i wouldnt dare watch it. its musical that justify all the beatles songs, almost all of my favorite Beatles song are used in this movie. the song that they chose perfectly suited in every scenes. i gotta admitted I'm not really a huge musical junky, but when i found out the all the music here are taken from the Beatles i didn't hesitate to watch it and glad i did! i was satisfied and fulfilled. As someone who have no idea what had happen in the mid-60's, I first want to thank everyone who had anything to do with the making of this film! Your timing could not of been better! You helped me to be more open and vividly understand it all, the passion and idealism that made up the mid-late 60's. I also enjoyed being bathed in all the very colorful special affects its so nice to see that they really play around on the colors they've used its like an art gallery. The 60's and early 70's were a time of outrageously bold colors and design. Something brilliantly portrayed in Across the Universe! And, of course, last and most importantly, the Beatles! Their music reaches deep into my soul. You gave me insights into the meaning of their tunes that after all these years never crossed my mind!jim's version of "All My Loving, "Strawberry Fields Forever", Ive Just Seen a Face"are brilliant rendition! and same goes to Evan Rachel's version of "Hold me tight"i even downloaded it into my limewire! except for their rendition of "i wanna hold your hand" and "come together" i dont know i just dont simply buy it but the rest are all good.
"ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE" by Frank Capra
I should be inclined to say that Frank Capra made his masterpiece with It's a Wonderful Life, and it would probably be the obvious, easy answer to make as a movie-lover. It is, no doubt, with enough fantastical scenes to make up a couple more movies, and the heart that sits right in. That I ended up not finding it to be a truly astonishing movie may be that I'm just a cynic deep down or i already whats coming (thanks to HBO preview). It's the most amazing of credits to Capra and his cast and crew that it does hold up this well, and that the sentimentality stringing together much of what happens is actually well earned. But it does teeter on becoming a bit too dated, or rather that it's appeal of being a fable really only works best when dealing with the crux of the character George Bailey, and almost becomes weird in how it leaps from great happiness to the terrible bleakness of modern American life.well i got a admit i was kind'f hesitant to watch it cos i might just get bored to it since i have no clue what the movie is all about and i've never heard this movie before, well thanks to HBO who i accidentaly seen it because of their show "hollywood's 10 best" in that epsidoe they were countinue down the hollywood's 10 best christmas holiday movie. and guess whose number 1?? haha hell yeah its the its a wonderful life!(and take note: the movie is really not all about christmas holidays, it just so happen that the climax happened during christmas eve)im now included to those countless of people who have been touched, inspired and shed a tear of this film.
favorite line: "to my brother george, the richest man alive!"(that scene for me is one of the most heartbreaking scene in the history of cinema)
